Valletta, Canon, Salute, Saluting Battery, Barrakka Gardens, Grand Harbour

The Mexican Navy cadet training tall ship Cuauhtémoc was given a salute from vintage guns at the Upper Barrakka when it sailed into Grand Harbour upon its arrival on Friday 21st August.

Thomas Smith Shipping were the agents of Cuauhtémoc.

The ship is on a cadet training cruise which left Acapulco, Mexico on the 24th April 2015. The ship has so far called at the following ports: Balboa Panama, Norfolk USA, Dublin, Portsmouth, Marseilles, Civitavecchia, Istanbul, and Valletta (21st to 25th August). The next ports include: Cartagena, Tenerife, San Juan Puerto Rico, Balboa Panama, with Acapulco as its final port – expected on 11th November 2015.

The sail ship, which included a crew of 220 on board, departed on Monday 25th August. The ship was open to the general public at the Valletta Waterfront. The ship has a brick-barca rig with three masts and 23 sails out of which 10 are square sails on the mainmast and foremast and 13 are staysails, with a sail area of 2,368 square meters.
