Amidst the chaos that COVID-19 has caused in 2021, the need to extend a helping hand to those in need can be felt more than ever. Local charities are facing greater challenges and the community’s responsibility to assist is required to help them take care of those in need.
The Thomas Smith Group Solidarity Fund has marked its 16th year; where all the company’s employees make heartfelt donations throughout the year to serve as financial assistance to charities in need. Beneficiaries are chosen through an anonymous poll held by the Group’s management – allowing the staff to nominate whoever they believe requires the most support during that year.
An astounding total of €4,500 were collected throughout 2021. Amongst the charitable organisations nominated, three local beneficiaries generated the majority of the votes – Puttinu Cares, CSAF and the Ursuline Sisters.
Puttinu Cares surely needs no introduction; as it marks one of the most popular charitable organisation in Malta. Their assistance to cancer patients and their families is extended both in Malta as well as abroad, following much-needed medical treatments, emotional and mental health support. The €2,000 donation will ensure the organisation remains a backbone to individuals in need of their assistance. Thomas Smith Group extends its heartfelt condolences to the charity, its support professionals, patients and families following the saddening news of Dr Victor Calvagna’s passing – Puttinu Cares’ president and pediatric cancer doctor.
A donation of €1,500 was forwarded to CSAF – Carers for Stray and Abandoned Felines. The non-profit organisation, which knows its inception in 2005, now offers a home and medical assistance to over 250 abandoned cats and kittens. This is only possible through the massive dedication of its volunteers and generous donations from the public. 2021 has seen a drop in donations, so it is with great hope that Thomas Smith’s little contribution will ensure all kitties get the help and love they deserve.
The Ursuline Sisters of St Angela Merici, commonly known as the Creche Sisters, are the backbone of the local communities in which they provide much care and assistance to poor children or others who are unable to live with their own families. With operations running since 1887 thanks to their founder Isidoro dei Conti Formosa, these sisters give infinite love and care to many little ones within the institutes and homes across Malta. Their celebration of love towards little ones has grown exponentially throughout the years; with five other houses operating overseas. It is a pleasure for Thomas Smith Group to donate €1,000 to these Sisters, in the hopes that this much-needed financial aid will go towards sustaining children and their needs.
Even though the COVID-19 repercussions have forced some of our employees to work from home, contributions as part of the Group’s Dress Down Fridays which go directly in the Solidarity Fund, are still being held to ensure we’re able to support more charities in the year to come.
